Opening Drive

Good Morning, Professors! 🎓

We are back. Happy 2026 and welcome to your once-a-month newsletter — The Final Exam. In today’s edition, you’ll see for the first time ever a document showing what one school is paying its players by position in Division I football, along with a suggested way to use it in your own class. You’ll also find a few updates on Extra Points and Professor Resources.

We are excited to officially launch the Extra Points Classroom Portal, which includes all the details on our classroom product, Professor Resources with built-out outlines, lesson assistance, and, more importantly, timely updates when breaking news or trending topics hit, saving you prep time. We also have access to a demo version of Athletic Director Simulator 4000, a guide on how to incorporate ADS 4000 into your teaching, and a message board to share best practices, discuss ideas and collaborate. We also provide access to Branch Library, a curated mini-version of Extra Points Library for students, allowing them to browse 150+ real-world industry documents. Create a free account here and tell us what you think.

Unfortunately, we cannot solve assignment extension requests, department chair drop-ins, or increased class capacity at the same pay rate. But we can at least try to help you as a professor. With that said, if you find a bug or something isn’t working, like an account not giving access where it should, please reach out to me.

HALFTIME | Teaching Tip | Revenue Sharing

Transitioning to your monthly tip: revenue share, NIL and money are being thrown around everywhere, alongside denials of open records requests and debates over privacy. To date, no one has found explicit information on how much a school is giving in revenue share, particularly broken down by position. Most of what we have seen has been percentages or rough figures in general terms … until today via The Final Exam!

Through an open records request, admittedly submitted for something else, we obtained a breakdown that an athletic director shared with donors, staff and other key constituents outlining their approach to institutional revenue sharing by position.

This comes from an American Conference football program, formerly the American Athletic Conference 🙃 team that went to a bowl game and lost its head coach this offseason. Here is their revenue-sharing breakdown.

QB 1 – $1,000,000
RB 1 – $150,000
WR 1 – $100,000
WR 2 – $100,000
WR 3 – $100,000
IOL 1 – $150,000
OT 1 – $250,000
IDL 1 – $100,000
DE 1 – $150,000
DE 2 – $75,000
LB 1 – $100,000
SAF 1 – $75,000
SAF 2 – $75,000
SAF 3 – $75,000

IDEAL TOTAL REV. BUDGET: $4.5 Million, Includes keeping QB 1, without QB 1 = $3.5 million.

🚨Spoiler Alert 🚨 | They Did Not Keep QB1

We are building this out more, along with additional information, including unredacted information, into a lesson outline that will launch in Extra Points Classroom on Wednesday, January 14th.

A few thoughts on how to use this in the classroom.

The total number here is $2,500,000. Before showing students this data, have them break down how they would divide revenue sharing across an AAC football roster. Ask them to justify why they would allocate money to certain positions, such as a quarterback or a kicker (unlike this team, which allocates nothing to one). After submissions, reveal the actual breakdown and use it to lead a class discussion on why, why not and what else they might do differently. 💰
